These exaggerated Speewah myths were collected by various authors. One of these was Bill Wannan, who published them in his book ‘A Dictionary of Lore, Legends and Popular Allusions’.

Pat Edwards used some of these stories as the basis for her own children’s book. Pat created the terrific characters of Strong-Arm Sam and Gentleman Gus, and their dilemma with the mythical Crooked Mick. Illustrated by Will Mahony, the children’s book served as a great inspiration for the Crooked Mick team.

Director Phil Smith loved Pat’s book as a young boy, and years later, after being accepted into the Australian Film Television and Radio school, decided to try to finally bring the epic fantasy to life utilising the latest digital tools.
